The area is scattered throughout with historic antiquities, many of which can be easily located on an Ordinance Survey map as a red circle and accompanying description.
Among the collection of antiquties is the old Catholic church at Massmount, this church is situated overlooking the parish. There is also an ancient ogham stone in Kilkaskin cemetery ( can be accessed via the Healy Pass ). The Irish ogahm script can be found on ogham stones, which were though to mark a burial site, as the text on the stones often contains the words "...son of..." . There are of course many other antiquities in the area including a "fulacht fia" - an ancient cooking place where food was boiled using hot stones and water.
The area is also dotted with Gallaun stones, these stones were thought to provide a communications channel between areas or a burial site marking. These historic features are only part of the vast history which spans the ages from the time of the Vikings to the present day events.
